Venetian Masks

Magpie have offered a wonderful selection of very individual and affordable Venetian Masks for some years now. We know how hard they are to find and how important it is for them to be just that bit different.

Venetian marks originated in the 11c with the Carnival of Venice which developed over time into the Commedia dell'arte, a form of improvised theatre. The Characters were identified by their masks and many such as Harlequin, Columbina and Scaramouch are still made today.

The practice of wearing masks reached its peak in the 18c when Venetians of all social classes used the Carnival masks as an excuse to hide a variety of illicit behaviour from others.

When Napoleon's troops occupied the Venetian Republic, the masks, along with the Carnival, disappeared and were only revived in the late 1970's. Today every street in Venice sports a variety of mask shops.

Traditionally masks are made from papier mache, which is layered onto a clay base. They are then painted in bright colours and decorated with gold leaf, sequins and feathers.

You will find our selection of Venetian Masks on display with a variety of other accessories, all specially chosen to ensure a special outfit is individual to you and suitable for:
